Endnotes
Endnotes are notes that are placed at the end of a document and are usually used for further reference information or similar options to footnotes.
Endnotes are placed into your document in numbered order or using personalised marks.
Inserting a Endnote
- Place the cursor at the insertion point for the Endnote
- From the Insert menu select Endnote
- In the dialogue box that opens you have a choice of Footnote or Endnote, select the Endnote option. Notice how the numbers change in the Autonumber option.
- If you want your Endnotes to be numbered leave the default setting at i, ii, iii. If you want Numbers or another type of numbered system click on the options button and the Endnotes option dialogue box opens with the following options.
- Place At Allows you to place the Endnote at the end of the Document or at the end of a Section..
- Number Format Allows you to choose from 6 different formats for numbering your Endnotes.
- Start At Allows you to start your numbering at any level you choose.

Continuous - when carry on the numbering for all pages
Restart Each Section - will restart numbering at each section
- Once you have chosen your options click on the OK button and you are returned to the Endnote dialogue box. Click on OK again and you are returned to your document ready to type in the Endnote.
Depending on what view you are currently in will depend on what your screen looks like. If you are in Normal view a Endnote pane will open and you can type in your Endnote next to the number and when finished click on the Close button. If you are in Page Layout View you will be placed at the bottom of the page. When you have finished typing in the Endnote you can return to the document by using the mousing or the up arrow keys.
- You have now placed your Endnote.
- When you place another Endnote the numbering will be automatically updated whether you place the Endnote before or after any currently in your document.
Automatic Endnote
To place a default Endnote you can use the Shortcut Commands Alt + Ctrl + E, this will bypass the dialogue boxes and put you into the Endnote section of your current view, ie Page Layout View - at the bottom of the page or text and Normal View - in the Footer pane.
Viewing Endnotes
The quickest way to view a Endnote is to double click on the Endnotes number/symbol in your document, this will place the cursor at the start of the Endnote in Page Layout View and into the Endnote pane in Normal view.
Going to a Endnote
You can quickly go to any Endnote in a document by pressing the F5 key and selecting the Endnote option, then typing in the Endnotes number and pressing the Enter key or clicking on the Go to button.
